Cornerstone Cab/Merlot/Malbec, Newton Forrest Estate
Leaving behind careers in medicine and molecular biology, Doctors John and Brigid Forrest established Forrest Estate in Marlborough's stony Wairau River Valley in 1989. This cheery pair won a coup at their first vintage, scooping a trophy at NZ's national wine awards. This extravagantly rich red blend exudes aromas of dark chocolate cherry liqueurs and spicy oak. Great depth of spicy blackberry, plum and chocolate flavours. Try it with roast venison.

2009 Les Fiefs de Lagrange, St Julien, En primeur, 12-bottle case 12 bottles per case
Since this worthy château embraced outside investment, the quality and consistency have marched on, hand in hand. The red vineyards are planted on some of the highest land (Gunzian gravel) in St Julien to 65% Cabernet , 28% Merlot and 7% Petit Verdot and the wine for Les Fiefs gets 20% new oak. A vintage such as this, showing all the attendant black fruit and lifted aromatics, shares the Grand Vin's fine tannic structure and will appeal to all fans of this fresh and elegant style. This fights its corner brilliantly well, and will be a joy in seven or eight years time. Drink 2016 – 2020.
PLANETA - Syrah IGT 2006 75cl Bottle
Ruby red to deep purple tones. Intense and persistent on the nose with notes of black fruits like cherry and blackberry; chocolate, leather and spices integrated with creamy vanilla and nut coming from the wood. On the palate the wine is full bodied, velvety and warm. Ending with soft and sweet tannins and with a long sumptuous finish. Colour:Ruby red with violet undertones. Nose:Displays intense characteristics of peppers, spices and berry fruits attributed to the hot Sicilian sun, more in keeping with the New World rather than French styles. Oak ageing has added complex aromas of figs and cocoa. Palate:Luscious and supple in texture, both the tannin and fruit are young and fresh and bring a lasting power to the palate. It's beauty lies in it's complexity though, rather than it's concentration. Young, luscious blakberries are tempered with spicey cloves and cocoa in this super stylish modern Sicilian Syrah. Drinks on release but will mature for 5 - 7 years. Will pair very well with grilled red meats, particularly game with rich sauces, and matured cheeses. Sicilian cookery: Rigatoni with red tuna and mint, risotto, stuffed leg of lamb, mixed grilled kebab, marsala cutlets. Sicilian cheese: Pecorino siciliano. The grapes were harvested from Planeta's Dispensa and Gurra vineyards. They were fermented on the skins in stainless steel fermenters, then aged in American (1/4) and Allier (3/4) oak barrels.
