2007 Montepulciano d'Abruzzo, Taverna Nova,
Chianti without the price tag? Wines from Abruzzo, on the other side of Italy from Tuscany, offer great flavour per £. Dynamic Donato Ranieri, head of Abruzzo's leading co-operative, Roxan, has done much to raise the profile of this overlooked region. From his Rosciano HQ, he oversees the vinification of fruit from around 700 growers, who have obediently lowered yields in pursuit of higher quality. Enjoy the warm, spicy cherry fruit in this robust, earthy wine with rich red meat dishes.
2007 Adnams Tuscan Red, La Cappella, IGT Toscana
The Tuscan red is made for us by Castello di Volpaia. Volpaia is the touchstone by which all other Tuscan wines should be judged. There's a refinement and simplicity about their Chianti which owes much the altitude of this ancient estate and the talented personalities involved: Giovanella Stanti, husband Carlo Mascheroni. This blends a majority of the native Sangiovese grape with a good dollop of Merlot which adds body to the lively red fruit flavours.
2006 Syrah, Bodegas Gouguenheim, Mendoza
An expensive-tasting Syrah that owes its chocolate-rich, plummy fruit to an impeccable upbringing in optimally-sited Argentinian vineyards. Funded by his Cognac-selling father, and steered by leading South American wine consultants Susana Balbo and Pedro Marchevsky, Patricio Gouguenhem put down roots in Tupungato's 'Valle Escondido' ('Hidden Valley'), an hour's drive from Mendoza. Susana revels in the fruit quality, making strapping reds like this. Wine for gaucho grills.

CANTINA DI MONTALCINO - 'Poggio del Sasso' Sangiovese di Toscana 2010 75cl Bottle
Clear, ruby red in colour with perfumes of cherries and fresh red fruit mingled with floral notes. The wine is lively and fresh on the palate, with soft, rounded tannins, good intensity, attractive structure and a decent finish. 100% Sangiovese.
GRANT BURGE - GB43 Merlot 2010 75cl Bottle
The wine is vivid red in colour. The nose shows complex aromas of raspberries and cherry fruit with subtle oak adding cinnamon and spice. The palate is fine with sweet ripe fruit tannins giving the wine great balance. The wine finishes with ripe fruit flavours, tempting you to go back for more. The fruit was crushed, de-stemmed and fermented in a static fermenter for 6 - 7 days on skins prior to pressing to stainless steel tanks where the wine underwent malolactic fermentation. After the completion of the secondary fermentation the wine was transferred to American and French oak hogsheads for maturation in oak for 12 months.

Heir to Rioja's Remelluri estate, energetic Telmo Rodriguez trained in Bordeaux and the Rhône. Having overhauled his family's wines, he looked beyond Rioja to create some of Spain's most exciting wines. Roaming relentlessly, he seeks out forgotten vineyards and unlocks their potential. This Grenache-Tempranillo from northern Spain is among his more accessible wines, with red fruit flavours, gentle tannins and a slightly spicy, meaty finish. A wine for chargrilled lamb.

Heir to Rioja's Remelluri estate, energetic Telmo Rodriguez trained in Bordeaux and the Rhône. Having overhauled his family's wines, he looked beyond Rioja to create some of Spain's most exciting wines. Roaming relentlessly, he seeks out forgotten vineyards and unlocks their potential. 2008 Merlot Dom. Moulin Gimie, Vin de Pays d'Oc
The domaine is situated on the banks of the Canal du Midi in the Languedoc and has been run by the Gimié family for several generations. Now in the charge of Christinne and Francois who work 25 hectares of assorted grape varieties. Ripe grapes and barrel ageing are the hallmarks of their vigorous red wines.
FETZER VALLEY OAKS - Shiraz 2007 75cl Bottle
Luscious aromas of ripe strawberries and raspberries are followed by inviting flavours of crushed cherries, red liquorice and mild spice. Well-rounded, juicy berry fruit with a long, clean finish. This round and fruity wine is a great match with grilled meat, onion tart or chicken in a wine sauce. It is also delicious to drink on its own. Suitable for vegetarians. KLEIN CONSTANTIA - KC Cabernet Merlot 2008/09 75cl Bottle
Forward thinking has taken form in a second tier of reds, blended with Helderberg fruit and bottled under the label KC. 'This allows us to elevate the quality and status of our premium red wines, reserving the very best parcels of vineyard for the Marlbrook and Klein Constantia Cabernet Sauvignon ranges,' explains Adam (Klein Constantia's winemaker (since the 2004 vintage) is 29-year-old Adam Mason). Healthy, deep garnet colour. On the nose is initial spicy - wood scents give way to ripe plummy, Christmas pud' aromas, and hints of cool grown Cabernet. The palate is well structured, but medium bodied. Mouth watering flavours of ripe, juicy red currants and fleshy plums. Wonderful array of classic, cooler Cabernet attributes complimented by velvety Merlot flavours. Judicious oaking has lent an added dimension of savoury flavours to this balanced, moreish morsel. With the correct storage, this wine will continue to mature and evolve for a further 8-10 years.

The town of Andosilla, at Rioja's northern edge, has prospered by its proximity to vineyards set among the fertile plains of the rivers Ebro and Ega in the beautiful valley of Baztan. Bodegas Bagordi was born of the enthusiasm of several local grapegrowers who united in 1995 to produce organic wines. Their success is evident in releases like this classic Tempranillo. Young and vigorous but still with those toasty aromas and rich, warm red fruit flavours.

CILLAR DE SILOS - Rosado 2008/9 75cl Bottle
Bright cherry red. Exotic aromas, of red, soft berry fruit and fruits of the forest. In the moth it is fresh, velvety and with a lingering finish. Recomended serving temperature, 14 degrees C. We recommend this wine as an accopaniment to fish, white meat and rice.
2008 Almuvèdre, Telmo Rodriguez
Heir to Rioja's Remelluri estate, Telmo Rodriguez trained in Bordeaux and then gained practical winemaking experience at top Rhône estates Chave and Guigal. Having improved the quality of his family's wines, he looked beyond Rioja to create exciting modern styles. In Alicante, he turned his hand to vinifying fruit from plots of Monastrel (the Rhône's Mourvèdre), to create this smooth, lush-textured red with rich blueberry and black cherry fruit, earthy notes and hints of pepper.
