2009 Château Perron, Lalande de Pomerol, En primeur, 12 bottle case 12 bottles per case
This Right Bank estate is currently in the very capable hands of Bertrand Massonie – who is the third generation of the family to run it. Fifteen hectares on sandy gravel top-soil over ferruginous sub-soil planted to 80% Merlot and 10% of both Cabernet Sauvignon and Cabernet Franc. Minimal use of chemicals (lutte raisonée), unrivalled attention to detail in the vineyards and hand picked grapes contribute towards the quality here. 30% new oak will round out this wine to perfection, and I envisage this in 8 years time as being the perfect bottle to be enjoyed with roast lamb. It will evolve into a delightfully ‘grown-up’ claret, with its combined red and black fruit attributes and some attractive tobacco leaf tones. Very good. 2017 – 2022.

2007 Adnams Tuscan Red, La Cappella, IGT Toscana
The Tuscan red is made for us by Castello di Volpaia. Volpaia is the touchstone by which all other Tuscan wines should be judged. There's a refinement and simplicity about their Chianti which owes much the altitude of this ancient estate and the talented personalities involved: Giovanella Stanti, husband Carlo Mascheroni. This blends a majority of the native Sangiovese grape with a good dollop of Merlot which adds body to the lively red fruit flavours.
LANGLOIS-CHATEAU - Chateau De Varrains 2003, Saumur Champigny 75cl Bottle
Limited stock. This wine comes from a walled vineyard that harbours the magnificent Chateau de Varrains in the heart of the Saumur Champigny appellation. The wine is made from the Cabernet Franc grape variety. After a long maceration period to extract colour and tannins from the grape skins, the wine then matured in large oak casks for a period of 1 year in the Chateau's magnificent tufa cellars. The dark ruby colour beautifully reflects the characteristics typical of its terroir. This is a wine of red fruit aromas and a slightly wood bouquet with elegance and balance on the palate.
2006 Carmenere Gran Reserva, Casa Rivas, Maipo Valley
Tear into some juicy steaks with this terrific, damsony-rich, tobacco and bramble fruit-scented Chilean red, from old, low-yielding Carmenère vines. A star of London's 2004 Wines of Chile tasting, it's a joint effort from Mariano Salas (who owns vineyards in Maipo's cool, dry Maria Pinto Valley) and Margaux-trained biodynamic winemaker Alvaro Espinoza. Carmenère is a Bordeaux fugitive, so amenable to Alvaro's skills. Judicious oak-ageing has brought its finer points to the fore.
