G D VAJRA - Barbera d'Alba Superiore 2007 75cl Bottle
£28.49

Good depth of ruby red colour with an intense perfume of damsons and chocolate. On the palate it has great concentration and intensity, especially on the mid-palate, with smoky, plummy fruit and lovely balance between supple tannins and youthful acidity. The grapes for this wine come from two exceptional vineyards - Bricco delle Viole in the commune of Barolo and Bric Bertone in the commune of Sinio. Bricco delle Viole vineyard is south and southeast facing, planted between 1971 and 1999 at an altitude of 380-470 metres above sea level. The vines are planted at a density of 4200-4700 plants per hectare. Bric Bertone is planted at 340-390m above sea level with a southern exposure. The planting density is 4600 plants per hectare and the vineyard was planted in 2000. The vines are trained in mixed Guyot system. The soil is rich in calcareous marl, with rocky outcrops, giving elegant, fragrant and particularly long-lived wines. Fermentation with indigenous yeasts took place in stainless steel tanks for 20 days. Temperatures were not controlled, but did not exceed 32°C with regular traditional punch downs. Malolactic fermentation followed for the first year in Slovenian oak barrels. The wine remained in oak for a total of 20-24 months before bottling. 93 points, Issue 192, Robert Parker's Wine Advocate.

Chianti Classico Riserva, Castello di Volpaia

Chianti Classico Riserva, Castello di Volpaia
£19.99

Volpaia is the touchstone by which all other Tuscan wines are judged. There's a refinement and simplicity about their Chianti which owes much to the altitude of this ancient estate and the talented personalities involved: Giovanella Stanti, husband Carlo Mascheroni and eminent consultant oenologist Maurizio Castelli. This fine Riserva is elegant and understated but with great persistence of rich red cherry and chestnut flavours. Save for fillet steaks.

LOUIS JADOT - Fleurie 'Poncereau' 2007 75cl Bottle

LOUIS JADOT - Fleurie 'Poncereau' 2007 75cl Bottle
£12.59

Fleurie Poncereau is fruity as well as floral. It is mellow and elegant but also a racy wine. It has a silky texture and finesse. Full, ripe red fruits are balanced by a supple freshness and acidity on the palate with a long finish. 100% Gamay. The Fleurie 'Poncereau' is vinified like all the wines from this region: semi-carbonic maceration of uncrushed grape clusters with pumping over of the cap. It is then aged in oak barrels for 8-10 months before bottling.
