Ancient vines of which 80% were planted in 1953 and the balance in 1972, by the Morey family. This three-quarters of an acre site produces pitifully low yields (20 – 35 hectolitres per hectare), but the health of the vines has improved dramatically since Dominique took this into biodynamic cultivation. At the very southern end of Le Montrachet, facing south, the wines are usually quite high in alcohol, but this is balanced to perfection by high acidity; wines for keeping – indefinitely.

The ever-sanguine Gérard Boudot, sporting a grey designer stubble, continues to make excellent wines. His immaculate winery inspires one with confidence, with its nautically furled hosepipes, shiny tanks, and scrubbed tiles underfoot. We are seeing a changing of the guard at the domaine, with his daughter and her husband gradually taking over the reins, but like all these things, gradual is the operative word. Maintaining standards won’t be an issue, but bettering their inheritance may be difficult. Gérard’s 09s are fresh and clean, with some excellent weight of ripe fruit. They will be drinking supremely relatively soon.

We used to stock the wines of Francois Jobard many years ago, and a recent return to his cellars showed us that we had been missing out in the interim. Francois has now handed over control of this estate to his son, Antoine, and we were very impressed with the quality of his 08s.

The fruit for this comes from three small parcels of vines, the oldest being En La Barre which was planted between 1953 and '56, and is supplemented by wine from the young vines of Clos de la Barre, Genevrières, Goutte d’Or and Charmes.

We have known this estate for many years, so it is a huge pleasure to re-visit and re-taste with François Jobard's super-capable son, Antoine. The wines used to be pretty good here, and I note Simon Loftus’ enthusiasm for them back in the ‘90s. But I am happy to say, François's winemaking philosophy has been passed on to his son, who has taken it all to another level, and is making even better wines than dad. Antoine makes a point of doing as little as possible in the cellar – and crucially he leaves his Chardonnays on their fine lees for 16 months, so when he comes to bottling, the wine has 'eaten up' the lees, and has taken on additional rich, creamy properties – and with the vitality, to age beautifully.

Pierre, who has now retired as Domaine Leflaive’s winemaker, continues with the family business under the Domaine Pierre Morey label, but has added the Maison Morey-Blanc to his repertoire. The main focus here is white wines, and they are bullish about the quality of these 08s, which are charged with ripe fruit and high natural acidity, ensuring freshness and vitality.

Since this worthy château embraced outside investment, the quality and consistency have marched on, hand in hand. The red vineyards are planted on some of the highest land (Gunzian gravel) in St Julien to 65% Cabernet , 28% Merlot and 7% Petit Verdot and the wine for Les Fiefs gets 20% new oak. A vintage such as this, showing all the attendant black fruit and lifted aromatics, shares the Grand Vin's fine tannic structure and will appeal to all fans of this fresh and elegant style. This fights its corner brilliantly well, and will be a joy in seven or eight years time. Drink 2016 – 2020.
